The Media Council of Kenya with other players in the Kenya Media Sector Working Group today brought together stakeholders both from the local and international arena to commemorate the #IDEI2020 on 2nd November.
The Chief guest during the event Ms. Esther Koimett, Principal Secretary, State Department of Broadcasting and tlTelecommunications, Ministry of ICT, Innovation and Youth affairs in her address noted that the government's commitment to the growth and expansion of the media has been evident through its its efforts to support protection of media freedom, media training and media sustainability interventions.
The CEO Media Council of Kenya Mr David Omwoyo on his part indicated that's the year 2020 has not been easy for journalists especially because of the pandemic, adding that the situation began last year and has been escalated by the pandemic where many journalists have lost their jobs. "We have had over 100 cases of violence against journalists, some of which have been handled through underhand deals. We betray other journalists when we make such deals
We have offered health reporting grants to journalists to assist them in covering stories. 125 community radio stations and 25 tv stations also benefited from the grants to assist them in their operations" said Mr. Omwoyo.
